A Passion to Pass It On
With 2016 behind us, we are looking into filling up our 2017 schedule. As Matthew and I have been discussing events and gigs for this upcoming year, we'd really like to start sharing more with schools. The dulcimer is a unique instrument, not one that most kids have seen, so it right away sparks an interest. Every time Matthew gets out on the streets to perform, some of his most intrigued listeners are children. It fascinates them and beckons them to stop and listen. Especially when Matthew plays the songs they are familiar with!
But we have another reason behind our goal of getting into more schools. You see, the dulcimer and dulcimer players are a rare breed these days. It's an instrument that is slowly dying out and becoming extinct, which is why most people have never heard of it. Matthew wants to introduce the dulcimer to the next generation. We need the young people to hear it and take enough of an interest in it that they want to pick it up and learn it too. The young generation is the hope of the dulcimer's future, but if they never have a chance to hear it, how will it pass on?
Help us get the word out. If you are a teacher or principal and would like to introduce the dulcimer to your students or school, you can contact us to set up a "show-and-tell" performance/class. Or if you are a parent, help us by putting the bug in the ear of your child's school. Spread the word and let's make sure the younger generation has a chance to know what the dulcimer is all about!
